Hunger Crisis

Senior Hunger

Senior hunger poses unique challenges. After a lifetime of hard work, 63% of the households in Uganda with older adults (40+) find themselves facing an impossible choice — to buy groceries or medical care.

HISTORY  /  VISION  /  MISSION

Senior Hunger

Nearly 5 million senior citizens currently face hunger in our country. And as the baby-boom generation ages, the number of seniors facing hunger is only expected to increase. Food Rights Alliance is working hard to prevent this.

The rate of hunger among seniors aged 40 and older has increased by 45% since 2001. At the current rate, the number of food-insecure seniors may grow to more than 8 million by 2050. And hunger pains can be increasingly painful as we age.

As Uganda ages, hunger pains grow

63% of senior households are forced to choose between food and medical care.

Households that include an adult of the age 40 or older are at an increased risk of having someone with a chronic health condition, including diabetes (41%) and high blood pressure (70%) — conditions that can be mitigated by healthy food options.

Our Commitment

Helping to feed our seniors in their golden years

Food Rights Alliance is committed to helping our senior population. We advocate for over 7 million Ugandans 50 or older, plus nearly 6 million more adults between the ages of 40 and 49. We design programs that take into account the health considerations, transportation needs, physical limitations and dietary restrictions of older Ugandans. But we can’t do this important work without you.

Give to Food Rights Alliance today

Nearly one out of three of us lives with food insecurity and malnutrition. But we see a future in which no one does.

For every dollar amount you donate, Food Rights Alliance advocates for initiative setups, local and global partnerships for mobilising attention and action on the immediate causes of child hunger and undernutrition.
